Submit To Authority

Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.
-Ephesians 5:21 (NIV)

No one likes to be told to submit. To many, the mere mentioning of the word instantly conjures up negative associations such as surrender, inferiority or conformity. Yet the Bible is full of instructions to submit.

Matter of fact, in the book of Ephesians, Paul illustrates the idea of submission carried out in various relationships: wives/husbands, children/parents and slaves/masters. These verses have been controversial for years, and can be severely misunderstood when taken out of context. Once again, no one likes to be told to submit.

However, it’s important to note that Paul began the topic of submission with a single, encompassing statement in Chapter 5, Verse 21: Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Paul isn’t telling us to become a doormat. First and foremost, he’s telling everyone, not just certain groups of people, to humble themselves and serve God and others. Why? Because Jesus did it first. He gave up his will to the Father, so he could serve us.

When we live with an attitude of submission, it’s an act of adoration for Christ’s example. It opens us up to setting our rights aside for others. It’s selfless, noble and sacrificial.

Submission never sounded so good.

It’s Preaching Season

Preach the Word; be prepared in season and out of season; correct, rebuke and encourage—with great patience and careful instruction.
-2 Timothy 4:2 (NIV)

In his second letter to Timothy, Paul gives the young leader one last challenge. He tells him to ultimately be prepared to preach for God in season and out of season. In other words, God might be going to use Timothy when he least expects it, so no excuses. This is your warning. Be ready.

Paul’s emphasis on preparation got me thinking… What might the “seasons” of ministry be today?

Surely I am prepared to talk about God before I head off with a team of missionaries to a foreign country; or before I take 50 teenagers out-of-state to work on other people’s homes; or before I have the privilege to speak before our church congregation on Sunday mornings. Those are obvious. That’s “in season”.

But what about those “out of season” moments in life that aren’t so obvious? The redundant, day-to-day, mundane events like shopping for groceries, dining at a restaurant, or watching a high school football game. Those aren’t mission trips, right? Those aren’t ministry opportunities, right? God wouldn’t use me in those moments, so why bother, right?

Honestly, it makes me wonder how many opportunities to share God’s story of love I might have let pass me by simply because I wasn’t ready. All those “what if”s and “should’ve when I could’ve” instances. It’s kinda sad to think about, really.

For that very reason, Paul’s charge to Timothy is clear: be prepared to speak for God at all times. It could happen anywhere, with anyone, at any time.

Lord, I don’t want any more blown chances. May my sight continually be alert and on target. No more excuses. I’ve been warned. I’m ready.

It’s preaching season.

Just A Phone Call Away

For “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”
-Romans 10:13 (NLT)

Here Paul, a leader of this revolutionary new religion called Christianity, is writing to the Roman people. One can assume that he was getting a lot of questions about what it took to become a follower of Christ and receive eternal life. Previous to this verse he talks about confessing with your mouth and believing with you heart, and he summarizes it all in verse 13 by quoting the prophet Joel: Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.

What a beautifully simple answer. You need him? Just call him. He’s as close as our own lips.

One thing I’ve learned recently is that oftentimes non-believers expect becoming a Christian to be some complicated, cumbersome process where you have to specifically say the right words and oh-so carefully jump through the right hoops. But Paul says we just call him.

If I need my friend, do I light candles, chant their name over and over, and hope this ritual connects me to them? No, I just call him.

All the time I hear people say, “If you need me for anything, I’m just a phone call away.”

Our God is no different. Salvation is just one call away.
